The success of an entire Automotive supply chain is so crucial in creating the economic and social stability of our great Nation, Kenya.
For instance the Boda Boda Sector in Kenya today (January 2019 ) has about 700,000 motorcycles on the road. Each Boda Boda rider operates 36 rides in one day. This translates to 25.2Million rides per day. It may be correct to state that we are a riding Nation. This shall remain the situation until such a time when we shall have a working Mass transport system.
The 700,000 bikes directly translate to 700,000 jobs for Kenyans. In addition each Boda Boda rider supports the livelihoods of average of 8 Kenyans on average. This means that the livelihoods of 5.6 Million Kenyans is supported by the Boda Boda sector alone.
The Motorcycle Assemblers and their related networks including local parts manufacturers directly employ 5,000 Kenyans on average. The Assemblers produce and sell at least 12,000 Motorcycles per month. This directly translates to 12,000 jobs for Kenyans per month.
The Assemblers pay on average Kshs 4 Billion in Government Direct Taxes. The Boda Boda riders take home Kshs 700 Million per day which interprets to Kshs 252 Billion per year.
The Boda Boda riders have remained very instrumental in supporting security agents in the ever challenging security docket. They have supported the police in foiling imminent terrorist attacks while playing their pivotal role in the society.
Attempting to slow such a life transforming sector in any way is akin to creating a serious economic crime.
- I suggest that KAM and all stakeholders to gradually focus and improve on localization of Parts so that we create more jobs. This is an ongoing process as recently guided by President Kenyatta.
- I also suggest that lots of efforts be placed on training and retraining of Bods Boda Riders. President Uhuru Kenyatta recently directed that TIVET institutions must take lead on this matter. We need to see these rolling.
- A marshal plan be implemented to enforce The MotorCycle regulations through the NTSA and related players. For this to tangible happen, I suggest that the National Treasury allocates funds to jumpstart the process.
Solutions to all our challenges lie within us. We must therefore engage each other for sustainable systems. No one has a monopoly of ideas. It only takes passion and a deliberate effort to “ Move from plan to action”. for the good of our great Nation.
Delay in production of Number Plates is most lame of all excuses. Besides it is a serious security risk to our great Nation. Someone is simply sleeping on their job. Who is this?
