Citing dirty tricks, the William Ruto Foundation on Monday distanced itself from claims on social media about poisonous relief food donated to residents of Kikuyu, Kiambu county.

The DP’s communications secretary David Mugonyi said the people behind the contaminated food are engaging “in political thuggery”. It was an apparent reference to efforts to diminish the DP’s influence and purge his allies from Parliament.

Mugonyi said the food in question did not come from the William Ruto Foundation.

He said Ruto’s foundation has been delivering relief packages through formal and known networks such as churches and mosques with the participation of local leaders to ensure tracking and tracing mechanisms.

The statement follows allegations that some people fell ill after consuming food distributed by unidentified individuals and bearing the brand ‘William Ruto Foundation’.

On May 20, Ruto distributed food to families in Nachu, Kikuyu constituency, in the company of MP Kimani Ichung’wah.

Earlier, Ichung’wah disputed the claims of tainted food, linking them to politics.

Ichung’wah said he was informed a white Land Cruiser was distributing food over the weekend at about 6pm in Gikambura.

“Please be cautious as evil people who are distributing these may poison people for politics! A family that consumed the sugar suspect it was poisonous as two of them have been treated after consuming it,” the MP said.
